For over 35 years, Marie Hugel has been the Trachtenmutter of the Schlierachtaler Stamm. The Trachtenmutter of the Schlierachtaler has a matriarchal role in the organization. She acts as a curator of the tracht (the keeper of the traditional costume) and is responsible for how it is worn and displayed. She generally observes a strict and conservative code and controls how the costumes is made and worn as per a set of laws dated back to the “Sammlung Bairischer National Costueme” (Bavarian National Costume Assembly) in 1820. Guidelines were transcribed regarding the proper display and wearing of a Bavarian Tracht.. To be a Trachtenmutter, one must have extensive knowledge concerning the culture and traditions from the Upper Bavarian regions.

WHAT IS A TRACHT?

Tracht comes from the German word "tragen", which is defined to wear. Specifically in Bavaria, there are many types of tracht, depending on region. In 1820 Freeman von Lipowski identified trachts as the costume native of Bavaria.

The Schlierachtaler is proud to wear the Miesbacher Tracht for men and women.
Miesbach is a town that lies in the mountainous region of the Alps, just an hour south of Munich and north of the Austrian border. Our founding members, who immigrated from this region, brought this beautiful and traditional costume to America.
