About
our Kindergruppe:
Our first kindergruppe was started in 1966. The purpose
of the kindergruppe was started as a means to teach
young children about Bavarian heritage, traditions,
and values and Schuhplattler dancing. We recognize
the children are the future of our organization.
They represent our “Next Generation” and
we anticipate that they too will pass to the future
generations our culture, heritage, and the Schuhplatter
dance.
Since 2004 the kindergruppe has been under the guidance
of Michael and Jackie Mattern. Thru their dedication
and efforts children are introduced to German culture
and heritage by the way of dance and music. Michael
has been with the Schlierachtaller Stamm for over
20 years, and has been a past Vice President of the
club. Jackie has been with the Schlierachtaller Stamm
almost 15 years. The way Michael and Jackie met is
similar to a German romance -- Michael at the time
was the Vice President of the club when Jackie waltzed
into his life in 1990 and they have been dancing
together ever since. Along with their two children,
Nicole and Michelle, they find Schuhplatter dancing
more than just a hobby, but as a great family activity
and a way of life!
The Kindergruppe has performed dances at our own
fundraisers as well as other multi-cultural events.
Namely, at Ellis Island, Plattdeutsche Folksfest,
Plattdeutsche Retirement Community, Queens Farms,
church festivals, nursing homes, and the Mid-Atlantic
Regional Kinderggruppe events. They have also preformed
at the anniversary of the New York City Public Library,
on the U.S.S. Intrepid, as well as the International
Festival for the Armenian Church in New York City.
The Kindergruppe also participates annually at the
German-American Steuben Day Parade on New York’s
famous Fifth Avenue.
In the kindergruppe we promote Gemutlichkeit (friendship
and good times). We have various outings, Halloween
Parties, Long Island Sprachtfest, Christmas Parties,
craft, and sport outings. We also actively interact
with
other
kindergruppes
throughout the United States. The children participate
in the Mid-Atlantic Kinderfest, as well as Kinder
Einzel Platter, and the North American Gaufest held
every two years. At these events our children have
an opportunity to meet children with similar interest
from other groups and develop long lasting friendships.
Some of our children also become German-American
Steuben Junior Princesses. As they become of age
most of the children have graduated to the adult
group and have taken an active role in our club by
being officers in our club.
We are very proud of the accomplishments of our
kindergruppe and especially for those parents and
contributors whom support our kindergruppe. It is
very important that the traditions, culture and language
continue to the next generation. The torch of our
heritage needs to be carried and passed on!!
Our Kindergruppe is always open to new members
to participate from the age five through sixteen.
